Dr. Rafael Consunji
Dr. Rafael Consunji [cohn-soon-hee] is the Director of the Hamad Injury Prevention Program and a Trauma and Critical Care Surgery Consultant at Hamad Trauma Center, Hamad Medical Corporation in Doha, Qatar.
He graduated from the College of Medicine and the General Surgery Program of the University of the Philippines, Manila, Philippines and then completed a Fellowship Program in Trauma and Surgical Critical Care at Johns Hopkins Hospital. He also completed a Master’s of Public Health with an additional Certificate in Injury Prevention and Control, at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, Maryland, USA.
Dr. Consunji has over two decades of experience in Academic Surgery, Critical Care, Public Health and Health Policy at the College of Medicine, University of the Philippines in Manila, the Department of Surgery, Johns Hopkins Hospital, Department of International Health, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and the Hamad Trauma Center, Hamad Medical Corporation in Qatar.
He founded and directed a national non-profit organization focused on preventing unintentional injuries in children [SAFE KIDS Philippines], managed community-based road safety projects for children in China and South Korea and coordinated regional programs of SAFE KIDS Worldwide from Washington DC.
He currently directs the Hamad Injury Prevention Program [HIPP] at the Hamad Trauma Center, Qatar’s national trauma center, and continues to collaborate with key stakeholders for road safety and injury prevention in Qatar and in the region.
He has experience in research, capacity building, policy formulation, program implementation and evaluation for injury prevention and trauma care in the US, Qatar, Malaysia, the Philippines, the Asia-Pacific Region and Sub-Saharan Africa.
Dr. Consunji has been the recipient and manager of research and program grants from the Department of Health (Philippines), World Health Organization (WPRO), the Road Traffic Injuries Research Network (World Bank Global Road Safety Facility), UNICEF, the World Bank, FedEx Express, Fresenius-Kabi, the HMC Medical Research Center and the Qatar Foundation National Priorities Research Program.
