Dr. Jamie Ranse

Dr Jamie Ranse is a registered nurse from Australia who is recognised internationally for his research and clinical leadership that focuses on emergency health care, primarily in the areas of high visibility, high consequence events that are either planned (such as mass gatherings events) or unplanned (such as disasters).

He is employed in a conjoint position as a Research Fellow at Griffith University and Gold Coast Hospital and Health Service, Queensland, Australia. Over the past 17 years, Dr Ranse has held various clinical, education, leadership and research roles in the emergency department environment. Dr Ranse has clinical and leadership experience of assisting in disasters such as the 2003 Canberra Bushfires, 2009 Victorian Bushfires and 2011 Queensland Extreme Weather Events. 

Dr Ranse volunteered with St John Ambulance Australia for over 20 years; previously holding the high-level national strategic position of Chief Nurse. In this position, he was responsible for the scope of practice and clinical governance of nurses within St John Ambulance Australia who were practicing in the out-of-hospitals during disasters and at mass gathering events. 

Dr Ranse completing his Doctor of Philosophy in 2017 at the Torrens Resilience Institute at Flinders University World Health Collaboration Centre for Mass Gatherings and Global Health Security, where he researched the experience of Australian nurses who assist in the out-of-hospital disaster environment. 

He has over 50 peer-reviewed publications in the area of disaster and mass gathering health. He is an active member of a number of national and international nursing associations. He is a Fellow of the Australian College of Nursing and College of Emergency Nursing Australasia, Chair of the Australian College of Nursing Disaster Health Community of Interest, and Chair of the World Association for Disaster and Emergency Medicine International Mass Gathering Special Interest Group.
