Dr. Shirmila Syamala is a Senior Consultant in the Department of Geriatrics and Long-Term Care at Hamad Medical Corporation. She is an American Board (ABIM) certified physician with specialty certification in Geriatrics. She came to HMC after several years’ experience as a faculty member in US residency programs, including at West Virginia University School of Medicine.

Since joining HMC in 2016, she has served as the Sepsis Lead for Long Term Care; Geriatrics Site Director for the Internal Medicine Residency Program and as faculty member in charge of Geriatric Fellowship Curriculum from 2016 to 2019. She currently serves as a member of the HMC Institutional Review Board.

Dr. Syamala is the Principal Investigator of the IRGC funded study “Hip fracture Outcomes- before and after implementation of OrthoGeriatric Service” & the MRC funded study “Risk factors for Falls in elderly patients”. She is a member of the National Health Strategy 2018 – 2022 National Health Aging Taskforce and leads the Initiative in elderly health literacy and the planned National Aging Survey of Qatar. Her special focus is promoting awareness of and knowledge about Healthy Ageing.

Since overseeing this program of work, she was instrumental in launching the Healthy Ageing website, which is a national repository of health advice and services information for older adults and their families and carers in Qatar. Dr Syamala has also coordinated several public engagement events and staff education events to promote healthy ageing understanding in the community.
