Dr. Shanmugan Ganesan


Senior Consultant and Program Director, ORL-HNS, Assistant Professor Clinical Otolaryngology, WCM-Q


Dr. Ganesan is a Senior Consultant and a Lead clinician in Rhinology, Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery Section, Department of Surgery, HMC. He is the Program Director for Otolaryngology residency program at HMC and an Assistant Professor in Clinical Otolaryngology at WCM-Q. He received MBBS degree and Postgraduate Diploma in Otolaryngology from the University of Madras, India. He obtained FRCS, from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, UK in 1995 and FRCS, from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, the UK in 1996. He completed the post-fellowship higher surgical training as a Specialist Registrar, at North Thames Regional Rotation, London, the UK from 1995 to 2001 and he completed the FRCS (ORL-HNS) intercollegiate board certificate from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, the UK in 2000. 

Dr.Ganesan's clinical practice in general otolaryngology, and specializing in nose and sinus disease, rhinoplasty and anterior skull base surgery. He serves as a chairperson and member of many committees at the departmental and corporate level. He was instrumental in obtaining the ACGME-I accreditation for the Otolaryngology residency program. He is an expert witness in Rhinology subspecialty and a member of the national guideline development group at the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH), Doha, Qatar. 

Teaching and training have always been his passion. He believes in sharing of knowledge is a step towards gaining competency. He has been actively involved in scholarly activities throughout his career and has been presenting at the national and international conferences. He takes part in various faculty and trainees development programs.

Dr. Ganesan has been appointed as the chairman of Quality and Patient Safety in Medical Education to oversee and coordinate all aspects of Quality Improvement and Patient Safety (QI/PS) measures involving trainees and medical students across HMC. He and his team have developed a SharePoint portal in Medical Education, related to trainees and training programs which have been widely used in the corporation. He works closely with the Regulatory, Accreditation and Compliance Services (RACS) department at HMC to ensure and to meet the Medical Professional Education standards of Joint Commission International (JCI) as part of the Academic Medical Center accreditation of various facilities.
