Dr. Sandro Rizoli received his Doctor of Medicine and completed a General Surgery residency in Brazil. He moved to Canada in 1992 and at the University of Toronto underwent a second residency in General Surgery followed by fellowships in Trauma and Critical Care, and a PhD under Dr. Ori Rotstein.
In July 2002, he became Assistant Professor of Surgery and Critical Care Medicine at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, and promoted to Full Professor in 2012. His life-long research has focused on the physiopathology and management of hemorrhagic shock in trauma with over 240 peer-reviewed publications. Dr. Rizoli supervised numerous PhD, MSc, fellows, residents and students.
Dr. Rizoli was the recipient of two endowed chairs: the De Souza Chair and the St. Michael’s Hospital/University of Toronto Endowed Chair in Trauma Research. Dr. Rizoli was the President of the Trauma Association of Canada, the Panamerican Trauma Society and Chair of the Region XII (Eastern Canada) of the American College of Surgeons – Committee on Trauma.
Dr. Rizoli is the current Medical Director of Trauma at Hamad General Hospital in Doha, Qatar.
