Karen Murrell, MD, MBA, Assistant Physician in Chief for Process Improvement and Optimization, Kaiser Permanent Medical Center South Sacramento, is also Chief of Emergency Medicine. She is responsible for innovative approaches to improve patient flow in both the emergency department and the inpatient hospital setting. Using
lean methodology to improve flow has resulted in markedly decreased time to physician and length of stay with decreased "left without being seen" rates. Dr. Murrell currently leads the Hospital Throughput Committee, where
queuing methodology is being used to impact the patient length of stay and to reliably predict staffing needs. She has extensive experience in hospital and emergency department management and practice, with over thirty years of experience in a variety of roles.
