Dr. Karl F. Gumpper is employed by Boston Children’s Hospital and is the Pharmacy Informatics Manager. He has been in this role for over 3 years. He leads a team of 3 pharmacists and 3 pharmacy technicians, who are responsible for all aspects of pharmacy informatics, technology, and automation for the institution. Dr. Gumpper received his Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy in 1991 from Northeastern University and a Masters in Medical Informatics (MSMI) from Northwestern University in 2015. He is a Certified Professional in Health Information and Management Systems (CPHIMS) and a Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist (BCPS). He completed a pharmacy practice residency at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, DC. He began his career at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, MD as a clinical pharmacist in neonatology and nutrition support. He returned to Children’s National Medical Center as a clinical manager and residency program director. He left Children’s National Medical Center in to become the first Director of the Section of Pharmacy Informatics and Technology (SOPIT) at the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). Dr. Gumpper was an active member of many of the local pharmacy organizations in the DC metropolitan area. He is a former president of the Washington Metropolitan Society of Health-System Pharmacists (WMSHP) and the Maryland Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (MSPEN). He has presented on various pediatric, nutrition, and technology topics regionally, nationally, and internationally. He participated on the American Informatics Medical Association (AMIA) work group on Advanced Interprofessional Informatics Certification (AIIC). He was recognized as a Fellow of the American Society of Health‐System Pharmacists (FASHP). He also received the ASHP Section of Pharmacy Informatics and Technology’s Distinguished Service Award.
