Dr. Artefaa Al-Shamari is a pioneering figure in breast cancer surgery, recognized as the first Qatari oncoplastic breast surgeon at Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC). A graduate of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI), she has dedicated her career to transforming breast cancer care through surgical excellence, innovation, and patient-centered leadership.
As the Clinical Lead and Chair of the Breast Multidisciplinary Team (MDT), Dr. Al-Shamari oversees integrated breast cancer management across disciplines, ensuring coordinated, evidence-based care for patients. She also serves as Associate Program Director of the Oncoplastic Breast Surgery Fellowship, where she mentors fellows and residents, advancing the next generation of breast surgeons. In addition, she leads as Chairwoman of the Qatar Oncoplastic and Reconstruction Conference (QBRC), fostering regional and international collaboration to elevate the standards of breast surgery practice.
Beyond her clinical and academic leadership, Dr. Al-Shamari is a passionate advocate for breast cancer awareness and patient empowerment. She is the Founder and Chair of the Qatar Breast Cancer Association (QBCA), a national platform dedicated to promoting early detection, education, and comprehensive patient support. As an Ambassador for the Qatar Cancer Society, she actively contributes to national strategies and policy development in cancer awareness. Internationally, she represents Qatar within the Oncoplastic Breast Consortium (Switzerland), engaging in global collaborations to enhance surgical outcomes and patient care.
Dr. Al-Shamari’s advocacy extends to youth engagement and education. As the YCBH (Youth Council for Breast Health) Qatar Chapter Lead, in collaboration with the BCYW Foundation Global Network, she spearheads youth-driven initiatives that empower students and young professionals to become ambassadors for breast health awareness. Under her guidance, the Qatar Chapter conducts educational programs, community campaigns, and research-based projects to promote early detection, healthy lifestyles, and destigmatization of breast cancer. Through this work, Qatar has become an active contributor to a global movement uniting youth in the fight against cancer.
Her commitment to excellence extends beyond medicine into leadership and strategic planning. Holding a Diploma in Strategic Management and Leadership, she integrates visionary thinking with clinical expertise to drive progress in research, education, and advocacy. As a member of the American College of Surgeons – Qatar Chapter and the Qatari Doctors Society, she continues to champion innovation and excellence in surgical practice.
