Prof. Tibor G Kovacs
Dr. Tibor G Kovacs, MD, is a consultant oncoplastic breast surgeon and Chief of Breast Surgery at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi and Honorary Professor at Fudan University Shanghai Cancer Center.
Prior to joining Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, Dr. Kovacs was Director of Breast Health, Chief of Breast Surgery at Jiahui International Hospital in Shanghai, China.
Dr. Kovacs received his medical degree from the University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Cluj, Romania. He completed his residency and Surgical Oncology fellowship at the National Institute of Oncology, Budapest, Hungary and a fellowship in Oncoplastic and Reconstructive Breast Surgery at the University Hospital of South Manchester, and Royal University Hospital Liverpool, UK.
Dr. Kovacs is a European Board Certified (FEBS) Surgical Oncologist and Breast Surgeon, a leading expert in breast cancer and reconstructive surgery with a vast experience in oncoplastic breast conservation, breast reconstruction and risk reduction breast surgery.
Dr. Kovacs worked at Guy’s Hospital Breast Unit as a Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon and Honorary Senior Lecturer at King’s College London, offering complex oncoplastic breast conservation, immediate breast reconstruction and risk reduction surgery.
Throughout his career he has promoted and introduced innovative surgical techniques (sentinel node biopsy, radio-guided localization, pre-pectoral breast reconstruction) leading to improved outcomes and better patient satisfaction.
Dr. Kovacs edited two textbooks on breast cancer and oncoplastic surgery, published over 110 peer-reviewed manuscripts, and several book chapters in the field of surgical oncology, breast cancer surgery and reconstruction.
At international level, Dr. Kovacs has been President of the European Society of Surgical Oncology; he is chair and founder of the ESSO Oncoplastic Breast Surgery Course, faculty on several prestigious international breast surgery masterclasses and workshops, examiner for the European Board of Breast Surgery, tutor of the ESSO Breast Surgery fellowship program at Guy’s Hospital, London. As Co-founder and Chair of BRESO, a European platform on Breast Surgeon Certification, focuses on promoting accredited and certified specialist surgical care for breast cancer patients.
In his most recent role, he established and developed a state-of-the-art comprehensive breast diagnostic and treatment center (Jiahui Breast Institute) in Shanghai, China. Dr. Kovacs believes in multidisciplinary and personalized treatment planning, shared decision making with his patients to achieve the best possible oncological and aesthetic outcomes following breast cancer surgery. He offers a comprehensive breast cancer management from diagnosis to rehabilitation and reintegration in the society to patients under his care.
Dr. Kovacs resides in Abu Dhabi and has two children, Beata, a clinical psychologist, and Tamas, who works in sustainability advisory and investment. He enjoys visual arts, multiculturalism, and outdoor activities such as hiking and cycling.
