Dr. Mahmoud A. Zirie, MD, FACE, FACP
Qualified from Jordanian University Medical School, Amman, 1980 and obtained the Jordanian Board of Medicine in 1986, and then moved to Qatar, where he was amongst the first batch to obtain the newly created Arab Board for Internal Medicine in 1989. He later moved to United States where he was enrolled in the residency programme at Michigan State University (1992-1994), then as postdoctoral fellow at University of Missouri, Columbia (1994-1996). He re-joined HMC, Qatar in 1996. 1997 was appointed as Head Section & Chief of Endocrinology at Department of Medicine,
During his tenure, Dr. Zirie made landmark contribution to the expansion of the Section of Endocrinology, that went to be one of the largest endocrine departments in the Gulf region. Rising from 3 physicians in 1997 to over 40 physicians currently.
This was simultaneously accompanied by gross expansion of service, from a single Diabetes Centre at Hamad general Hospital to several secondary/tertiary care diabetes centre at the satellite hospitals facilities. Along same lines he began a Diabetes educators Training Programme in 2002, which helped to raise the number of Diabetes educators from only one in that year to over 40. Establishment of podiatry service also took place in 2002 and now it is a fully fledged department on its own. On other fronts, he made landmark contribution in setting up MDT clinics for Thyroid Cancer, Pituitary disease, Osteoporosis services as well as Retinal Screening programme.
Dr. Zirie is a member of several national and international associations like American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, American College of Physicians, Jordan Medical Association, Qatar Diabetes Association, etc. and he received several honours & awards from different organization/associations like Hamad Medical Corporation, Qatar Diabetes Association, The Environmental friend Center, Doha – Qatar, Youth and Sports Association, Doha – Qatar, etc.
He is also contributed with an impressive more than 70 papers in peer reviewed journals, and several chapters in books. He was active and proactive in the local and regional academic and scientific activities. He was among the founding members of AACE GC and served in its Board of Directors for several years. He heads the scientific committee of Qatar Diabetes Association and been the chair of the Organizing Committee of Qatar Endocrinology Diabetes and Metabolism Annual Conference (QEDM) since 2015.
