The Qatar Metabolic Institute (QMI), officially launched 1 May, 2016 by Her Excellency, Dr. Hanan Mohamed Al Kuwari, Minister of Public Health, is part of the Academic Health System (AHS) and of the clinical departments of Hamad Medical Corporation. The Qatar Metabolic Institute aims to improve health and disease outcomes of the Qatar population affected by diabetes, obesity and metabolic disorders. Working in close collaboration and partnership with several leading clinical, education and research institutions in the State of the Qatar, QMI works to support the successful implementation of the National Diabetes Strategy including the delivery of high-quality clinical services, education and research for patients, public and healthcare professionals.
The QMI partners include Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC), Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC), SIDRA Medical and Research Center, Qatar University (QU), Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), Weill Cornell College of Medicine-Qatar (WCM-Q), University of Calgary-Qatar (UCG-Q) and College of North Atlantic-Qatar (CNAQ).
QMI coordinates its activities closely with the national diabetes programs, as its director, Prof Abdul Badi Abou Samra, is also Co-Chair of the National Diabetes Committee under the leadership of the Ministry of Public Health; and Director of the Qatar Diabetes Prevention Program research cluster, which is funded by the Qatar National Research Foundation (QNRF) and Hamad Medical Corporation.
