Dr. Monica Skarulis 

 
Monica Skarulis is a Senior Consultant in Endocrinology and the Director of the Qatar National Obesity Center and Deputy Director of the Qatar Metabolic Institute. She served as senior clinical investigator at the US National Institutes of Health, National Institute of Diabetes, Digestive and Kidney Disease for two decades, performing research and training students, residents and advanced trainees in clinical research. She has broad research experience conducting human physiology studies, clinical trials and translational research and has published more than 130 papers in peer reviewed journals. In 2007, she designed and launched the Metabolic Clinical Research Unit at the Mark O. Hatfield Clinical Research Center. She served as a scientific member of the NIDDK institutional review board for over 25 years and has been passionately involved in graduate medical education throughout her career. 

Her current research focus is the metabolic adaptations after weight loss and novel nutritional approaches to the treatment of obesity and obesity-related diseases. In her role as Director of the newly launched National Obesity Treatment Center including the Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism Research Unit, Dr. Skarulis is establishing a multidisciplinary team to provide enhanced clinical services in a research oriented environment.
